5-Axis Machine Tool Field Service Engineer

The 5-Axis Machine Tool Field Service Engineer is responsible for installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of advanced 5-axis CNC machine tools at customer facilities. This role requires strong mechanical, electrical, and CNC control knowledge, along with the ability to work independently in the field while delivering excellent customer service. Emphasis on Mechanical skills is most desirable.

Key Responsibilities

Installation & Commissioning

• Install and commission 5-axis CNC machine tools at customer sites
• Perform machine geometry checks, leveling, and alignment
• Configure CNC controls, drives, and auxiliary systems
• Verify machine accuracy and performance to manufacturer specifications
• Conduct test cuts and validation runs
• Provide customer training during installation

Troubleshooting & Repair

• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues
• Troubleshoot CNC control systems and servo drives
• Repair spindle systems, tool changers, rotary tables, and axis components
• Perform laser calibration, ballbar testing, and geometry adjustments
• Replace defective components and assemblies
• Document service activities and resolution details

Preventive Maintenance

• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance services
• Inspect wear components and recommend replacements
• Optimize machine performance and reliability
• Provide maintenance recommendations to customers

Customer Support

• Deliver professional, customer-focused service
• Communicate technical findings clearly to customers
• Support customers remotely when required
• Travel to customer locations as needed

Documentation & Reporting

• Complete service reports and expense documentation
• Maintain service records and machine history
• Communicate technical issues to engineering and support teams
• Follow company safety and quality procedures

Required Qualifications

• 3-7+ years of CNC machine tool service experience
• Strong knowledge of 5-axis machining centers
• Experience with CNC controls (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, or similar)
• Mechanical, electrical, and control troubleshooting skills
• Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
• Experience with precision measurement tools
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel weekly

Preferred Qualifications

• OEM service experience with 5-axis machines
• Experience with laser calibration systems (Renishaw, API, or similar)
• Knowledge of G-code and CNC programming
• PLC troubleshooting experience
• Experience with spindle rebuilds and alignment
• Technical degree in engineering, electronics, or relate field

• Machine Types: 5-Axis machining centers, horizontal and vertical machining centers
• Systems: Servo drives, spindle systems, tool changers, probing systems
• Measurement Tools: Ballbar, laser calibration, levels, indicators
• Software: CNC diagnostics, service software, PC-based tools

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Ability to travel frequently, including overnight travel
• Ability to stand, kneel, and work in confined spaces
